Izzy has finished his contract at the University of Queensland, and has now relocated, at least for the time being, in Bilambil near Tweed Heads, NSW. He has re-enrolled to complete his PhD (0ff-campus through Wollongong Uni), but is, according to the twisted logic of CentreLink, ‘not unemployed’, but also not entitled to Austudy, Newstart or other such government handouts. So: Unwaged but also, apparently, not unemployed, Izzy forges on in his quest to become a fully-fledged academic. In the meantime, of course, he continues to do what he does best: He is performing spasmodically in semi-acoustic mode in cafes and smaller venues around the Tweed and Northern Rivers area, as well as playing bass with The Hillbilly Blues Bandits, and rehearsing up a 60s band, The Yesterbeats. Auditions and rehearsals are under way for a mini Zarsoffs tour around south east Queensland, instigated by Rory Zarsoff, the band’s lead guitarist during the 1980s. The founding lineup of Paspalum stopped performing together mid-2008, after recording and releasing an album of original material titled ‘Sticky Grass Pudding’. Izzy featured on four of the songs from that album, and has written quite a few new ones – many of these will no doubt find their way onto the next Zarsoff album, in some form. Izzy will soon be recording a kids’ album (he wants to be the Black Wiggle, but doubts the viability of this), as well as a solo adults’ album. He also recently played bass on Dave Cavanagh’s soon-to-be-released album, and some live promotion shows may eventuate from that as well. As he approaches his 60th birthday in April 2009, Izzy unravels the rope of his jib and sets it into the wind once again – hang on for the ride!

Izzy has been on leave doing university research in Queensland, as well as writing some material for the next Zarsoff Brothers album, so there are no live gigs booked for the band in the short term. Since April 2008, when his contract in Queensland finished, Izzy has relocated to Bilambil in northern NSW. A mini-tour with Rory Zarsoff, lead guitarist with the band in the 1980s, is a possibility, but Izzy’s preferred lineup is the one that recorded the ‘Mixed Business’ album. There are still plans for this version of the band to mount a tour of skullduggery around Sydney and NSW regional venues, once a new album of material eventuates.

Meanwhile, Zarsoffs drummer Bologne and his band LICK are gigging and recording, and Shaggy is performing live around Sydney venues with his own band. Smokey is also performing with BEACHHEAD, so keep an eye out). Izzy’s adventures while he’s up north have included being the bass player & shared lead vocals with semi-acoustic band ‘Paspalum’. That band released an album titled ‘Sticky Grass Pudding’, which Izzy recorded on his 24-track digital Yamaha machine. The founding linep of ‘Paspalum’ disbanded in July 2008. Until that time Izzy also played bass with ‘The Bob Dylan Songbook Band’ and in late 2008 he played bass on Dave Cavanagh’s new album, set for release in early 2009. Izzy also plays bass with Northern Rivers band ‘The Hillbilly Blues Bandits’, and has performed selectively with Murwillumbah singer-songwriter Gabi Bliss. Izzy is also looking for musicians for the band version of my 21st-century skiffle project, ‘Izzy Foreal & Associates’, as well as rehearsing up a new 60s band called ‘The Yesterbeats’. As if he isn’t busy enough, Izzy is also planning two solo albums – one for kids and one for adults. The Zarsoff Brothers, however, is his greatest love, and there will be a return!

The Zarsoff Bros were intending to apply for the Marketing section of the John Butler Seed Grants that recently became available. Our intention was to apply for some money to pay for a publicity push on the new album. So, we contacted at least five PR companies who specialise in publicity for bands, to ask for a quote so we could submit it with the grant application. We were greeted with stunned silence by most of them. Two promised that they would provide us with a quote, but failed to do so by the grant deadline (in fact, both have not contacted us since). We can only surmise from this behaviour that PR companies are not in this for the business, but to be associated with something Cool. Even after nearly 30 years in the business, the good old Zarsoffs are still considered too left field / controversial / uncool by the powers that be! We can’t even pay somebody to do our publicity! However, we wear this rejection as a badge of honour, as we do booking agents reticence to book us into venues. The Zarsoffs have never compromised their original intention to take the piss out of an industry that takes itself way too seriously, and this latest episode proves we are still the Bad Boys of Australian Rock!
